Twitter Share Buttons!

Having come nearly to the end of my 9 week web development bootcamp at Hackery You in Toronto, I wanted to share a hot tip on sharing your sites on twitter.

One of the best things a junior dev can do with their projects is make them shareable. Getting some tweets and social media attention from your projects could help you stand out from the crowd with prospective employers and could even get you some freelance gigs while you are on the job hunt.

I got better at adding twitter buttons over these past few weeks and have now figured out how to customize the content of those auto generated tweets, turns out it’s pretty easy! I’ll save you the pain of the many ways I tried before and skip right to the goods.

To generate a basic twitter button visit:

scroll down and select button, when the popup window is rendered choose share button

Then a link you can paste straight into your code will appear. But that’s not customize yet! Be sure you click on set customization options just above the link they provide.

In the customization field you have many options. You can auto-populate some text, include your twitter handle, generate some hashtags and recommend some twitter accounts (which will not display in the tweet).

I’ve done an example of how you can customize those fields:

Note: do not include @ for your twitter handle or recommended accounts or # for the hashtags as those will generate automatically. If you want multiple hashtags just comma separate them.

And voila! Once you click update, you’ll have a link to copy right into your HTML to make your project shareable.
