Preptober day 10

It is officially October, which means NaNoWriMo is upon us writers!

I love NaNoWriMo for a multitude of reasons. It helps me practice my writing, it’s good for the soul, my first novel came out of it, I love sharing my writing with others passionate about it….so many reasons. So I thought I’d jump on here and tell you some of the normal and some of the abnormal things I am doing to prepare.

1. Pick a name

I’ve known what I’m writing for NaNo this year for months. Often book ideas come to me in the form of a name, so this was a really easy task for me to do in the last ten days. I have the title written down and will be announcing it on the official NaNoWriMo website later this week.

2. Setting the groundwork

This one is very much something I do that not many other writers will need to do. For me setting the groundwork looks like making sure I’m dropping all the right hints into my current projects that make reference to my NaNo book but will be published before it comes out. This includes introducing side characters who will be main characters in my NaNo novel, as well as setting the scene and doing some foreshadowing into what’s going to happen in my NaNo novel.

3. Planning

I used to hate planning, but I love it now. I know where the story is going to go, what’s going to drive it, how I’m getting to the end and who is going to succeed. My NaNo novel is a follow up to a book I have already written, which means I don't have to plan my characters as much, seeing as they are already written. However, I do have some new characters with a new magic system which I am developing and familiarising myself with at the moment.

4. Preparing my space

I’ve recently had a change to the spaces for my writing and, whilst gaining so much more desk space, my office is still rather cluttered with moving boxes and things that don’t have a home yet. I’m one of those people who needs to be in a tidy space in order to function well and create to the best standard, so one thing I am concentrating on is organising and preparing the best workspace possible.

5. Finishing WIPs in time for November

WIPs, for those of you who don’t know, means works in progress. I currently am in the middle of writing two books and my biggest task for October is to get them finished before November rolls around and I need to put all my energy and attention into my NaNo novel. It helps that this also incorporates step 2 and is an incredibly important step to my planning and creative process.

6. Settling into a routine

I love a good routine. Unfortunately I was trying to work and handle my health over the summer and fell out of a productive routine, so I am taking October to get my routine sorted before I head into one of the busiest months of this year. Having a routine is so important to succeeding in NaNoWriMo, as it ensures that there is writing time for you every day that you are able to stick to.
