Elizabeth Warren Will Restore Opportunity to Rural Iowa

Elizabeth Warren knows the struggles of rural America, and has a plan to make rural places, vibrant, welcoming and sustainable.

Elizabeth grew up in Oklahoma on the ragged edge of the middle class; it was a commuter college that cost $50 a semester set her on the path to become a public school teacher, law professor, U.S. senator and candidate for president of the United States.

Watch Elizabeth talk about her comprehensive plan for rural America here:

As president, Elizabeth will take a new approach to supporting farmers and the agriculture economy. Rather than the status quo of subsiding Big Ag — a status quo that’s failing rural communities — a Warren Administration will guarantee farmers a fair price, reduce overproduction, and pay farmers for environmental conservation.

Elizabeth will also make the investments needed to ensure our rural communities thrive. That effort starts with making sure rural hospitals and health clinics keep their doors open, delivering high-speed internet access to every community, and restoring the quality of life that makes living in rural America appealing to begin with.

Elizabeth’s plans to enforce antitrust laws will give family farmers a fair shot against Big Ag.

Outreach to rural communities has been a priority from day one of the Iowa for Warren campaign.

John Russell, the campaign’s Iowa rural outreach coordinator, has convened 18 rural listening tour events throughout the state. At each of them, Russell opens the floor to rural Iowans to provide their ideas for how federal policy can improve their lives.

“I’ve held rural issues listening tours in the smallest towns of the sparsest counties: Ida, Decatur, Ringgold, Van Buren,” Russell wrote in a Medium post about his experience working in Iowa. “I’ve met people on their doorsteps to talk about health care, wages, childcare, climate change, aging parents, declining Main Streets, student loan debts and, yes, that feeling that Trump took advantage of them in 2016.”

Elizabeth’s plans and the outreach efforts of her Iowa team have contributed to her extensive support among rural Iowans.

“When I look at Elizabeth, I see Iowa’s great tradition of prairie populism — the bravery to call out the corruption that holds back hard-working people and the vision to offer an alternative,” Norris said. “She’s calling for the big, structural change we need to ensure opportunity for all — and she can get it done.”
