Complementary currency in an abundance game society

In an abundance game, societal basic needs like food, water, shelter, and medical care would be universal. Poverty ceases to exist in any meaningful capacity; instead a person’s quality of life is principally driven by their choices.

In Jonathan Kolber’s book, A Celebration Society, he suggests a potential future civilization where the greatest good is achieved through service once the need for manual labor is erased via automation. Within this new framework the economics of society would certainly change, but not necessarily at the cost of artisanry and some form of capitalistic commerce (with guardrails.)

In this scenario we have a world where money is somewhat obviated by a lack of needing to work for the essentials. What could someone do to generate value for society? Good deeds, science, and engineering.

I submit a proposal for a complimentary currency in this leveled-up world: Karma. Good faith efforts by citizens will be rewarded with this digital currency from the state, other citizens, and beyond. Educators, healers, and other service roles will be entitled to a Karmic gift from the state at regular intervals. As long as you’re doing something that contributes to the whole, you will receive Karma. And if you choose to follow more artistic pursuits, people may pay for your works in Karma.

In the end, Karma is a system of commerce for luxuries. I believe people will always want “special” things, personalized items. Encouraging good behavior for the opportunity to buy “treats” has been proven to work for millennia.

Let’s build a more humane world together. 🌍 ❤️
