Why I Chose an Apple Watch Over A Traditional Watch

I have found that spending a little more time researching products results in higher satisfaction as the purchase is well thought out and of good quality. I tend to set a budget and then buy what I think the best is in that price range. In 2017, I had purchased an Apple Watch Series 2 but had to return it due to a slight allergic reaction I had to the metals in the watch.

I really missed the watch after returning it. I missed how it reminded me to do things with a gentle tap. I missed how I could answer a quick call while washing the dishes. I missed how I could quickly check my notifications without seeming too obvious. I ended up with a Bertucci Field Watch with a Nato Strap. Great beater if you’re looking for one!

Enter Apple Watch Series 3

To be honest, I was not too impressed with the new watch when it was announced. Sporting a similar design, the only thing that drew my curiosity was the improved processor. So I decided to wait. I bought the iPhone X and was happy through the holiday season. I had no plans to purchase the watch until I started working out again in January. If I thought bringing my iPhone 7 to the gym was inconvenient…bringing the iPhone X was even worse. I was using a Spigen case which made the phone just big enough to regularly come in contact with dumbells my lap.

Before considering buying the Apple Watch, I was already thinking of buying a new watch. It had been a while since I bought one for “looks”. The Bertucci with a NATO fit 99% of my needs. Tough in the gym but too bulky for a fancier night. As more time passed, I just couldn’t justify pulling the trigger. For 100–200 dollars more than what I paid for the Bertucci, I was only getting a watch that was marginally better than what I already had. Honestly, I wanted something styled like the Omega Speedmaster, but all the closest lookalikes were discontinued (looking at you Seiko!).

I decided on the Apple Watch because, for the money, you are getting a beautifully designed watch with faces and bands you can change to match your style and needs. I get it, it’s no Speedmaster, but the Apple Watch combines form and function into something that looks quite good on the wrist.

A little research told me the Series 3 non-cellular was not made with the same ceramic composite that the Series 2 was. So I bought the Cellular version mainly out of fear of having another allergic reaction. Furthermore, I promised myself this time I wouldn’t wear the watch 24/7 and wear it more like I would a normal watch. I have this theory that I may have worn the first watch too often which may have contributed to my allergy rash.

After wearing the watch for almost three weeks, I’m happy to report I have not had an allergic reaction to the metals. I’ve had very slight itchiness in the area but that is probably due to sweat being trapped there during workouts. The itchiness was nothing more that I would experience with a normal stainless steel watch.

Buying the Cellular version turned out to be a great decision. I hooked it up to my cellular provider just to test it out for a month and I was hooked. While I wish Apple’s “radio station” options were more specific, being served up fresh hip-hop and heavy metal is amazing during a workout. Additionally, now I don’t have to worry about missing an emergency phone call during a workout because the watch will pause my music and vibrate on my wrist. You can also turn off this feature if you’re hardcore.

(Apple Watch App>General>Do Not Disturb>Workout Do Not Disturb)

A full day of use (usually starting at around 7-8AM until Midnight) would leave me with about 45–50% battery life on Watch OS 4.2.2. That includes a workout with streaming music!

The decision boiled down to: Am I spending my money wisely? Is a Speedmaster look-a-like going to bring me more happiness? Is an Apple Watch going to meet my needs better? The answer was clear to me. I don’t have a couple thousand dollars to throw around on nice watches only to appreciate their horological beauty. I like my tech to be multifunctional and have it work according to my preferences. Luckily for me, the Apple Watch checks all the right boxes.
