Wording Changes Everything

Today most people discover their news through the online world of social media. Even though news can be just one click away, it comes at a cost. Does one honestly know if the information getting shared online is trustworthy or not? The way people phrase their content can change the entire meaning of the story.

A recent story that ended in tragedy took social media by storm in the last few weeks. Gabby Petito and the whereabouts of what could have happened to her had social media users becoming investigators themselves. People on platforms like TikTok were creating videos on theories and opinions on the case and what could have happened to Gabby. There are also videos on the platform that talks about domestic violence and the indicators from the video. In this article, the Huff Post tweets a story on how these theories or stories impact people.

As we all know, news stories can get twisted, and the facts can get skewed through social media, but sometimes it can shed light on other cases. ABC News reports how the Gabby Petito case is gaining traction and other missing people cases that may have been dismissed. This has caused a debate and has been brought back to the idea of racial disparity in media coverage. Even when a post can be reporting on a different topic, one comment or share can change the meaning and impact of the post and shift it to another direction.

Social media is not what it seems to be. Behind all the perks that come with an online presence, it has a dark side. As we would like to assume everyone does things for a good and moral reason, that is not true in most cases. It does not just influence political circumstances like stated in the article, but it impacts generations in a not-so-positive way.

As people call it today, “Clout Chasers” is prevalent terminology for people trying to post provocative or drama online to gain attention for further benefit online.

As we continue to develop in a society engulfed in social media, we must not try to compare and try to be someone we are not. Nowadays, it is all about the next thing that could make me trend online or what could I post to gain more followers? People tend to lose themselves through social media and trying to achieve high status.

These two recent articles talk about the influence that social media trends and fake news can have on people, especially younger generations. Falling to misinformation and trying to gain traction online can lead to consequences that affect you online and in your day-to-day life.

As we continue to navigate through the social media space, we learn more about the impact of social media. The influence of online presence can skew in a positive or negative direction. One must be cautious of what they choose to believe or follow and what they have to say about it. Wording can change the meaning in any scenario, and we as humans must take that into account.
