The Fate of the Real Estate Agent

Any business that wants to remain relevant long term has to find ways to innovate and change the game! If you can’t outright disrupt your field you must find a way to stand out, the quickest way to do that is to identify a problem with your market/industry and work tirelessly to fix it. Over the last decade I have been involved in hundreds of real estate transactions all over the state. Some small some large, some simple and some wildly complex. I have seen first hand the emotions both positive and negative that this process invokes and boy have I learned! In that learning I have realized that there is one singular problem with the industry that terrifies agents and keeps them somewhat in the shadows. Ignorance. The problem is that the average person has little to no idea what a real estate transaction entails. That’s the primary reason they seek out an agent in the first place. The mere thought of this changing terrifies agents. If the knowledge of real estate becomes commoditized it puts their livelihood at stake and puts them on the brink of extinction. Or so they think…

I believe the exact opposite! I know the knowledge of how to navigate a real estate transaction will become commoditized, I believe for many it already is. I know buyers and sellers are getting more educated to the point that many, albeit a tiny minority, see the real estate agent as an unnecessary figure that charges too much. My bet is the same bet made my lawyers, therapists, contractors, and teachers. Even if you know how to navigate a transaction you won’t want to due to the complexity and the inherent risks involved. Nuance breeds industry. You can fill out your own legal forms, represent yourself in court and testify for yourself, you don’t. You seek legal council. You could download an app to meditate, motivate, and help your depression, you don’t. You seek a therapist. You could remodel your own house. Perhaps finish your own basement, but you don’t. You hire a contractor. You could teach yourself french on the internet, you don’t. You go to school to learn from a professor. Why? Convenience and security. They’re professionals and well, you’re not.

Therefore I am not afraid of you learning the ins and outs of real estate. In fact I welcome it, I want it! The more educated you are the better we can work as a team to succeed! The number one issue in the industry is buyers and sellers who are uneducated and make mistakes even when they have agent supervision or get frustrated with the process because they lack context and depth to understand the nuances of what goes on. My mission is to educate you as fully as I can because in the end you’ll call a professional even if you “know” what to do.

The Home Nerds Podcast is a project that I started about five years ago and to be hones I quit. I quit because I didn’t know enough. I quit because I didn’t have the experience yet. I quit because I didn’t think it was valuable. I was wrong. Dead wrong. Knowing what I know now I am recommitting to this project that has one objective. To educate you. It’s not meant to entertain, or create controversy. It’s not meant to be flashy or cool. It’s cold hard data. I don’t expect you to listen forever but at least while you are in the process of buying or selling you can learn the details! This series will give you the in depth answers that agents don’t want you to know. The sacred knowledge that they sell you in order to charge 3%. I am going to let it all out of the bag!

Remember this what do LeBron, Cristiano, The Rock, Eminem, Beyonce, Serena, and Cardi B have in common?

They all have agents! Not because they’re stupid, not because they’re incapable of doing it themselves. They may actually know more about their craft than their agents do in many cases. They all have agents for one reason and one reason alone…

They have better things to do… and so do you!
