The Illusion of False Ego

You are not what you think you are.

Once upon a time, a sculptor in a village created a lovely idol of the Lord and considered selling it in the city for a good price. As a result, he put the deity’s idol onto his donkey and set out for the town.

The villagers bowed in front of the idol as he passed through the village. The crowd would bow in front of the idol on every street he traversed.

But then something weird happened. The donkey, carrying the idol, believed he was unique, so everyone was bowing to him.

He was ecstatic with his newfound respect.

After selling the idol, the sculptor quickly returned. The donkey halted in the middle of the road as he crossed the town, expecting a hearty greeting.

But no one seemed to notice him. The donkey was offended and began braying, to the point that the locals drove him away.

The majority of us make the same error as the donkey.

People are bowing to that glimpse of Divinity that they recognize inside us, not to ourselves.

But, we cross the narrow line of demarcation into an area of false ego if we start taking credit.

The fundamental distinction between a material and a devotional/spiritual lifestyle is that we acquire more ego in the material world as we grow.

The false image of us being the flesh covers the intellect of the soul. That’s why we form a false consciousness that invites pain and agony into our lives.

Accepting this body as one’s own body is referred to as false ego.
False ego means identifying with this matter which we are not.

“I am an American; I am an Engineer, I am a politician, I am the body, I belong to this family, I am the husband/brother/son/daughter, etc.” — this thinking is false ego.

When one realizes that he is not his body but rather a spirit soul, he realizes his true ego.

The more we develop in a spiritual/devotional lifestyle, the more ego we lose.
