Warped Thoughts From a Marathon Brain

The brain goes amazing places when you’re running over 26.2 miles above 8,000’ on mountain trails.

As I was punching out miles on a recent marathon plus run in the Bighorn Mountains, I suddenly decided to record my thoughts along the way.

The route I chose for this particular run started at 8500’ in elevation and climbed up over three peaks all above 10,500’ in elevation.

Someone asked me why I did runs like this the other day at work. All I could think to say was, “should be fun or at the very least, not boring.”

So here go the thoughts as recorded and unedited.

Creek crossing in first mile, Bighorn Mountains by author

Ah, screw it! Gonna get wet anyway. May as well start now.

Did a fish just swim by my leg? That felt like a fish.

Streams were made by God. So were all these uphill sections…through streams.

Is this really the trail? Am I already lost not even an hour into this adventure?

Maybe I don’t even like God right now. Uphill in flowing water.

No, really God, I like you. I even like uphill trails in flowing streams. Just don’t let a mountain lion eat me.

Summit of Ant Hill, Bighorn Mountains by author

Who the hell named a 10,860’ peak Ant Hill?

Maybe the dude who died cutting in the switchbacks was named Ant and they named this hill after him.
