A Saturday Afternoon at Trafalgar Square

A group of South Asians pose for a photo. Most of the men had beards and most of the women were wearing hijabs. All of them were wearing dimly coloured vests. Bright smiles decorate their faces as they pose after what I supposed was another job well done. Nearby was a foldable table. Not far from them were a line of people sitting on ledges enjoying meals from a disposable container.

A slight turn of the head to the right, were a group of mostly mostly middle-aged Chinese. They were protesting agains the ‘harvesting of organs’. The signs were glaring, but their movements did not shout as they were doing tai chi in the middle of their makeshift area.

A group of unmistakably British teenagers hang around a ledge overlooking the square. Dubstep music playing, bottles of alcohol in hand. At one point, one of the the girls wrestled a placard away from an obviously drunken man. It was 4pm. She succeeded and sent the man off on his way.

A man is kneeling on the ground, alternating between the picture in his hand and the chalk sketch he was making. In his solitude, he was soon joined by a middle-aged couple who could have been tourists. They asked about the man in the picture, who was sporting a round white cap and had a fluffy beard.

The wide section of the stairs at the square are taped off. Covid.

Down the stairs are signs alleging the pandemic to be a scheme by those in power to control the people. One sign read ‘convid hoax’

Indifferent to that large group were a smaller group of mostly boys performing flat ground tricks on their bmx bicycles. They ride around an area riddled with chalk writings on the floor. Most of them say ‘No Mask’.

That was Trafalgar Square on a Saturday afternoon in the current covid times (or if you were to agree with those protesters, convid times).
