This past week we had to have an arborist come out to our house and cut up a bunch of our trees. While on vacation two weeks ago, we had a large portion of one of the trees break off and suspend itself between its original tree and the one shown in this picture.
While the damage wasn’t bad, other than to this poor tree that looks like a skeleton now, it was very interesting to learn a few things about trees. Especially the ones in my yard.
As our guy started cutting everything up I watched with interest. Many of our tree branches were hollow on the inside with rot. As a homeowner, this was a little disconcerting to me as these giant trees hang out all around my property.
Most of the trees on the property are as old as the original portion of my home which was built in 1905. That makes them more than a hundred years old. As the trees keep growing, they will start to hollow, but the stronger exterior parts of the trunk and branches will still be strong.
Until you don’t trim them out for probably five to ten years and branches get too heavy. Then things start falling apart.
As the professional explained and showed me how to care for the trees with the things I could do, I started seeing some important correlations between life and these trees.
In fact, it started to amaze me how much a bunch of old trees could speak into our lives on a regular basis. So, I thought I might share a few lessons I learned that are changing the way I approach life.
